No. MarkScanner drafts marks and per-question comments, but every result is editable and nothing is finalised until you approve it. It’s a review-and-approve workflow, not blind automation.

Yes, that’s the core of how MarkScanner is designed. Work it can’t read clearly and drafts that look doubtful are flagged for your attention, and you can change any mark or comment before generating the feedback sheets.

Change it. Every draft mark and comment is editable, and nothing is final until you approve it. An unflagged answer can still be wrong, so you review the drafts before approving. The worked examples show what that review looks like.

Either works. You can upload or write your own rubric, or let MarkScanner draft one from your answer key and edit it with you. Generated rubrics are written with Canadian spelling, metric units, and Canadian contexts, and you can tweak the style to match your department.

Yes. You can draft a new quiz or chapter test as a printable vector PDF, regenerate individual questions, and produce an optional Version B variant from the same source to discourage copying. See the how it works page.

Handwritten math is what MarkScanner is built for. It reads the student’s work, considers the steps and the final answer, and applies your rubric question by question.

Yes. Partial credit follows the items in the rubric you approve, so a student who sets up a question correctly but makes an arithmetic slip later on doesn’t lose the whole question. An answer equal in value to the expected one counts in any form, such as factored or expanded, unless the question asks for a particular form. A different valid method earns the rubric items it achieves.

MarkScanner is designed for real student work, including messy pages. Handwriting and scan quality can affect the results. When it can’t read what a student wrote clearly, it flags the answer for your review rather than guessing silently. An answer without a flag can still need correcting.

Secondary math, especially algebra, linear equations, factoring, quadratics, and functions: multi-step, show-your-work questions on quizzes and chapter tests. PDFs from a photocopier or document scanner work best. JPEG, PNG, and WebP images also work, including clear phone photos. iPhone HEIC photos need converting to JPEG first.

Yes. After you approve the grades, MarkScanner generates a clean one-page feedback sheet per student, with the grade, per-question comments, strengths, and next steps, that you can print and staple to the returned paper.

Yes. You can download a CSV of the class results to drop into whatever gradebook you already use. No proprietary integration to set up.

MarkScanner is built for secondary math teachers. Individual teachers can start with a free trial, and we help set up the first assessment. Your account data and uploaded files are stored in Canada. Scanned student work is sent to Google’s paid Gemini API only to draft marks and feedback, and it isn’t used to train AI models. You can delete uploaded work from your account when you’re done with an assessment. See the Privacy Policy for the full details, including sub-processors and retention.
